Our cycles can be transported by automobile, either as a fully-assembled one-piece cycle on a rack or trailer, or (if it is modular or has built-in separation couplers) as a partially-disassembled and stowed item.
Most of our bicycles are substantially longer than ordinary upright bikes, and larger than short-wheelbase recumbents. Our trikes are longer and sometimes wider than conventional “adult” trikes and “tadpole” style recumbent trikes, and our four-wheelers may be even longer and bulkier. Nonetheless, all Lightfoot cycles can be transported with the right vehicle or racks.
Partial disassembly may sometimes be desired for transport inside of a vehicle. All of our bikes and road trikes have quick-release wheels, which can be removed or replaced in a matter of seconds. The telescoping stem can be compacted (we are developing a fold-down stem), the handlebars can be rotated downward, and the seat can be collapsed downward or even removed; all of this can be accomplished in a few minutes with a 5mm and a 6mm hex wrench.
Car receiver-hitch rack
We have a rack specifically designed to carry two recumbent (or upright) bikes or a single trike or quadracycle. This is the only rack we carry; racks from other sources are listed below on this page.
This rack comes in three variations. The basic version (carracb) will carry two bikes or a narrow (32″) Lightfoot trike. The wider version (carract) will carry two bikes or a wide (42″) Lightfoot trike. The largest version (carracq) will carry two bikes or a wide (42″) Lightfoot quadracycle.
The rack folds up against the vehicle to minimize length when not carrying a cycle, and hinges down for improved access to the vehicle’s rear door.
The rack will support vehicles with 700C, 26″, 24″ and 20″ wheels. A custom adapter can permit the support of cycles with 16″ wheels.
Long-wheelbase recumbents, tandems and triplets with wheelbases up to 80″ can be supported.
This very sturdy rack weighs about 50-60#, depending upon version. It is made of steel and is painted basic black.
Other Miscellaneous Solutions
A standard bumper hitch rack can be used to transport Lightfoot bikes. If used on a small car, you may wish to remove the front wheel so that the overall length of the bike better matches the width of the car.
A single Lightfoot road trike also can be transported (one at a time) on bumper hitch racks that are designed for 3 or 4 bikes. The challenge here is that loading the trike is a two-person job.
