Located in southeastern Florida, Fort Lauderdale is often compared to Venice, Italy, because it’s home to an intricate canal system. The city is just over 20 miles north of Miami, and about 40 miles south of Palm Beach. While most tourists make this their vacation destination because of the beaches, there is far more to do within this charming oceanfront city. Culture and Demographics

Culturally, Fort Lauderdale is a mix of cultures, from those born from a long line of area residents to immigrants who’ve moved to the area. A large number of the immigrants come from Latin America, followed by Europe. As a result, you’ll find many restaurant with Cuban and Latin American influences. English is spoken throughout the area, but you may hear French, Haitian-Creole, and Spanish in some neighborhoods.

Lauderdale. When Spanish explorers entered the area, they brought smallpox and other diseases with them and the tribe dwindled and eventually fled to Cuba after the Seven Years’ War. Forts went up and small populations started making the area their home. It was in 1920 that the area started to see measurable growth.

Latino Girl in BikiniDuring WWII, Fort Lauderdale became a military base. When the war ended, military members moved back or remained in the area and brought their families with them. Over time, it would become a popular yachting center and home to some of the world’s largest cruise ships.


Flights in and out of Fort Lauderdale are handled by the international airport. There is also train service through Amtrak.
